Chris Hall, Carla Simmons & Hazel Scott
blues : americana : cajun : country : folk : rock n roll
Bluejulep were formed by Chris Hall the man who gave us R.Cajun and the Zydeco Brothers, The Bearcats and Zydecomotion. With these internationally acclaimed bands he has headlined festivals all over Europe and the USA and earned a reputation as not only one of the finest Cajun accordion players in the country but as a musician who puts together formidable bands that always hit the spot!
His reputation has led to recordings with the likes of Mike Harding, Bill Wyman and Kate Bush as well as the 15 or so albums he has recorded with his own bands. As if that wasn't enough he recorded with Paul McCartney (Beatles), Dave Gilmour (Pink Floyd), Ian Paice (Deep Purple), Mick Green (Pirates) and Pete Wingfield (Van Morrisson) at Abbey Rd Studios on the Rock ‘n' Roll album that led to appearances on Top of the Pops, The Jools Holland Show, The Tube Special and a historic gig at Liverpool's Cavern Club. Since then he has gone on to form a truly international Cajun band with two of the leading musicians from Lafayette, Louisiana playing gigs in Louisiana and Europe, has even headlined major European festivals with his own all star Louisiana backing musicians and still finds time to record and tour with all the bands he formed.
Bluejulep take as their starting point a variety of related roots sources; cajun, alt country, blues, and celtic music, stirring them into a cohesive cocktail that lifts the spirit, warms the heart and moves the feet. They present the music in a way that respects its roots adding harmonies and instrumentation that supports its heart and soul. The end result is a tasty and powerful cocktail that is refreshing, heady and guaranteed to reach the parts other bands can't reach, music with the emphasis on letting the the good times roll with songs that are about opening the soul.
Alongside Chris Hall are Carla Simmons who is well known through her work with Zydeco/blues outfit Hottboxx. She has fronted her own band at many festivals and never failed to make an impression with her strong vocals and down home accordion playing. Hazel Scott completes the line up with her exquisite vocals and sensitive guitar playing. When the three combine their voices it's a sound made in heaven with a rhythm section that never fail to groove! Their recent appearance at the Off The Tracks festival earned them many new fans and Hazels cameo spot at the 2004 Tonder Festival in Denmark left a lasting impression on both crowds and musicians alike. The trio combine their own songs with ones learnt from people like Alison Krauss, Lucinda Williams, Slaid Cleaves, Cleoma Breaux, Memphis Minnie, Johnny Cash and The Carter family.
