A 5 piece traditional Cajun band featuring some of the biggest names on the UK Cajun Scene
Hazel Scott grew up in a small Scottish village called Quarter not too far from Glasgow. Her Grandmother was an outstanding singer and something of a local village celebrity.
Though she was bombarded with the sound of accordion from the radio on a daily basis at home she had never been a fan of the rawkish noise it made. But whilst at university she discovered an album of something that was totally different to the music she knew.
The album was of Cajun music and she set about collecting every album she get her hands on. This strange music set her on a quest that led to her eventually forming her own band!
The Hazel Scott Playboys take their name from the Scott Playboys …the great Cajun band fronted by Walter Mouton from….you guessed it…Scott In Louisiana. On her first visit to Cajun country Hazel stayed in a house in Scott for three weeks, went to see the Scott Playboys perform and being from Scotland and called Scott it seemed the right choice of name!
Although new to the scene Hazel has already won many fans. She was invited to appear on stage at Tonder Festival In Denmark with Breaux and various Mamou Playboys and has guested on stage at Gloucester Cajun Festival with The Flatville Aces and The Bearcats. She has also appeared on stage with various Cajun musicians in Louisiana and has in a short space of time impressed many Louisiana musicians including Steve Riley, Dave Greely, Mitch Reed , Randy Vidrine, Russell Cormier and Walter Mouton with her authentic Cajun vocals.
Walter Mouton, after she sang a couple of songs with his band at La Poussiere in Breaux Bridge said "right on the money" and fiddler player U.J. Meaux said "thats a big voice on a little lady!". Indeed when Hazel Scott sings Cajun its easy to imagine being right there on some back porch in Louisiana
She had drawn together a band which features many of the top Cajun players in Europe . With Chris Hall ( rcajun / bearcats / zydecomotion ) on accordion and from The Flatville AcesJjock Tyldesley on fiddle, Gavin Lewery on drums, and Vera Van Heeringen on bass this band combines the most experienced players around.
Though they only play occassionally due to other band comittments a short tour in January 2006 made a big impression. The Cajun Barn in London immediately declared them one of their favourite bands. Footloose in Matlock said they were the best Cajun band in the country. Not bad considering it was their first ever gig!
They specialise in some of the less well known Cajun songs gathered from old recordings and unreleased archive materials found in private collections and in the Louisiana Archives and Library of Congress. Be prepared for an awesome new sound. High quality Cajun music that will move your heart and feet.
